Off the Ground

The Herb Campbell Amateur Radio Club has officially been accepted into the RAC’s Youth Education Program.

The Radio Amateurs of Canada (RAC) Youth Education Program is to encourage Amateur Radio as an innovative way of learning in schools across Canada, and a good way to make connections across the curriculum.

The ultimate goal of the Program is to:

  1. encourage young people to look to the sciences and technologies for possible career and personal development;
  2. provide for the revitalization and growth of Amateur Radio with an infusion of young people.

January 2008 saw the inauguration of the Amateur Radio Club at our school. The club’s planning had been envisioned almost 2 years earlier.

With the support of the RAC Youth Program, HCARC now has a HF Transceiver which it can use to further develop the skills of its initial members and all the new ones to come. Many thanks go the Youth Education Program in its efforts to help young members to advance their Amateur Radio skills in a hobby that will last a life time.

Our club initially started with 10 members (3 adults and seven students from grade 7 and 8). As the BASIC class progressed, we ended up with our current membership of two adults and four students.

Club members are working on taking the BASIC Exam.

The first exam took place on April the 29th.

Re-writing of the test occurred May 1st.

Re-writing occurred on May 6th.

Ham in Canada

In Canada, there are several types of HAMs. They are BASIC, BASIC+, 5 WPM (also 12 WPM) and Advanced. BASIC HAMs can communicate with other hams using conventional store purchased handheld, mobile or base transceivers on VHF frequencies. Basic+ and both 5 WPM and 12 WPM HAMs can use frequencies that allow world wide communications without the need of land line or Internet connections.

Anyone can be a HAM. You only need to take a course and make the grade. Each country has their own policies regarding issuing of amateur radio licenses. In Canada, our governing body is Industry Canada and our support group is Radio Amateurs of Canada, otherwise known as RAC.
